1 Freddy Mercury (If they must be living - I suppose I'd go with the poor man's Freddy Mercury, Justin Hawkins from The Darkness)
2 Buckethead
3 Johnny Greenwood
4 Danny Carey
5 John Entwhistle... ( John Myung I guess, if Entwhistle is unavailable due to post-mortem decay)
6 No backup singing neccesary.

Your list is so descriptive...

You didn't even specify whether "the guy from (insert band name here)" is "the guy" who plays "the instrument" in question. Sometimes there is more than "One guy" who fulfills your requirements. One can only assume that more famous person in the capacity specified by the original poster is what you meant, but we all know that assuming things leads to racism, which leads to nazis. Just trying to save you from your inevitable spiral into facism and not caring who plays what instrument.

As much as I liked Entwistle (I mean who doesn't dig his lines on Boris the Spider), I do think Bonham is a better bassist. I can certainly think of some great Jazz bassists who are superior, but the thread is about rock. Jack Bruce was good and could sure sing better than any mentioned.

BTW, I was recently listening to some of the Stones' LPs and gained new respect for Watts. I focused on his drums and they were great. I'd probably choose him for my drummer.

Bonham? John Bonham? The DRUMMER for Led Zeppelin was a better bass player than JAE?

Sacrilege... just because Hawkins can hit high notes does NOT make him a Freddie Mercury. Maybe he's a great frontman... but Freddie has a control of his vocal chords that some Opera singers envy. I have the Wembley DVD and some of the stuff he does is just sick. Hawkins essentially has one timber - cock rock. Freddie could do like 20 different things from a Daltry type sound, to crooning, to castrati stratospheric vocals.

I understand the comparisson, but I have to protest.

It's nice to see that someone knows who Buckethead is. I saw him with the fake GnR a few years ago... as weird as he is, he's probably one of the greatest studio guitarists ever. I saw him do some sick ****...

If this must be modern day I'd say

Roger Daltry
Slash
Gem Archer
John Paul Jones
Zack Starky

Oh I completely understand, but see, I started the band with Freddy and his voice in my mind, and if I can't have him, I'd have to have someone who could attempt to pull off the same type of operatic high falsetto stuff but still be able to front a rock band. I know Hawkins is but a pale imitation of Mercury, but then again, when you are trying to find someone to replace him in a band, who isn't?

He's probably the most prolific, enigmatic, and versatile guitarist of my generation, and maybe like 1 in 100 people have ever heard about him. Granted, his varying range of styles from thrash through electronic to jazz aint everyone's cup of tea, and frankly will probably turn a lot of people off, (not to mention his "look"

)but the man's skill is undeniably there. I was just going through a bunch of old compilations I made back in like 2001 and found three or four songs from "One Less Thing To Worry About" , with Buckethead and Viggo Mortensen. Unfortunately the quality sucks ass, now I have to look around for it online.

I'm sort of worried about slash BTW.

He really hasn't been the same in a while, I wonder if he gave up drinking or something.
