Size down 2 and don't wash your jeans ever. Right?

Most of the good stuff has already been said:
Find a style you're comfortable with
If there is something you really like that is a bit out of reach, splurge because you'll end up buying more of the cheaper stuff and not be as satisfied.
For your key pieces (jeans, shoes, outerwear) you probably should look to a better brand with exceptions of course)
Don't buy things just because they're on sale, make sure you love it.
Don't be afraid of a tailor.

One thing i'd say, is to buy things at your own pace. I know on this messageboard, it's tempting to buy a bunch of stuff quickly, especially if you're new. However, style changes (more evolves than changes) and your priorities may change as well.

Also, i'd would try to plan your purchases ahead of time. If your body weight and general style/taste are pretty stable, buying things out of season can really help you. Getting my peacoat out of season saved me $100 and other people who take advantage of seasonal clearances reap benefits a few months later. Buying things on sale is dangerous though as it may be hard to find your size. I know i'm still a bit peeved i haven't been able to find that Blue/Grey APC Sweater from last fall in size 1 (some superfuture member is selling it but won't respond to my pms).

I'm sure it's nothing personal. I always try and ignore/stay away from anyone with pms.

if you find a pair of running shoes that work really well for you. go back to the store and buy a few more pairs of the same shoes. after nike/adidas/reebok find out that you like them they will be discontinued or subtely changed so that they are no longer comfortable. This applies x10 for cycling shoes.

focus on fit and quality, not brands and pricing-better to have 1 great fitting item than 11 ****** fitting items

Earn lots of money so that if you see something that looks good on you, you can afford it.

The only other thing I can think of is that it is better to have your own personal style than to try to squeeze yourself into some mold.

On a related note, the best defense is a good offense; it's not whether you win or lose (it's how you play the game); and what does "Piso Mojado" mean?
