Size down 2 and don't wash your jeans ever. Right?
Most of the good stuff has already been said:
Find a style you're comfortable with
If there is something you really like that is a bit out of reach, splurge because you'll end up buying more of the cheaper stuff and not be as satisfied.
For your key pieces (jeans, shoes, outerwear) you probably should look to a better brand with exceptions of course)
Don't buy things just because they're on sale, make sure you love it.
Don't be afraid of a tailor.
One thing i'd say, is to buy things at your own pace. I know on this messageboard, it's tempting to buy a bunch of stuff quickly, especially if you're new. However, style changes (more evolves than changes) and your priorities may change as well.
Also, i'd would try to plan your purchases ahead of time. If your body weight and general style/taste are pretty stable, buying things out of season can really help you. Getting my peacoat out of season saved me $100 and other people who take advantage of seasonal clearances reap benefits a few months later. Buying things on sale is dangerous though as it may be hard to find your size. I know i'm still a bit peeved i haven't been able to find that Blue/Grey APC Sweater from last fall in size 1 (some superfuture member is selling it but won't respond to my pms).
