If a co-worker in a position above yet not directly above you said this to me, is this a partial compliment... or am I correct in thinking he perceives me as being a kiss-ass?

I agree. Calling you his right-hand man would be a compliment. Calling you a yes-man means you're either a kiss-ass or a doormat.

It caught me off guard. I would consider myself amiable, or eager to please, I don't know I suppose if I were him it might appear as though I were a kiss-ass.

Oman,I was really trying to determine if it could be taken positively at all.

I realize 'yes man'= kiss ass... but i am trying to turn a positive spin on it. I am dense, but I am not that dense... I am not many steps above it at this point, but I am not employed by Texas DOT, and my workstation is not a toll-booth.

sorry, i didn't mean to offend but your boss certainly did. i can only speak for myself, but i would've taken this as utterly insulting and gotten justifiably upset. i think you should have, too. who the hell is this guy to demean you like this, to call you a "yes-man"? what's next, he ***************? i believe that no matter what your rank in the organization, you are an individual with rights. have some pride in who you are, man. don't allow yourself to be talked down to unless, of course, you are simply allowing him to believe that you are a yes-man, purely in order to achieve your own ends. in that case, you have everything under control.

Yeah, unless the guy was just expressing himself badly, or misunderstood the expression that's pretty offensive.

Your first instinct is usually the correct one. I'm surprised this person came out and said that, did you ask if that was his perception of you?
