So, it's almost Christmas, and I've decided that this year I am going to get myself a single useful bag or briefcase on sale afterwards. I have a few bags already, but none of them seem to fit the bill in terms of utility and looks. What are the alternatives? Here's what I have now:

#1 Filson Twill Briefcase
pFILSON1-2231581_filson1_p275w.jpg

I've had this for years and it's a great bag. Problem: it's too small, it gets a little beat up, and it's not comfortable to wear over the shoulder like a messenger bag would be. You can't comfortably wear it because the strap is too narrow.

#2 Jack Spade Waxwear Messenger

Mine is more green in color and is about five years old; I got it at a sample sale in NYC and it has a great patina. Problem: it's too small and doesn't have a handle.

#3 Patagonia Critical Mass

Problem: this bag is *huge*, plus I'm not a bike messenger. I use this when I ride my bike.

None of these are really doing the job. I'm a grad student in English lit., and so I haul around a laptop and a bunch of books. All day I'm crisscrossing campus to where I'm meeting students, teaching classes, meeting professors, etc. When I was an undergrad I used a big Timbuk2 bag, and I miss being able to haul around a lot of stuff comfortably. But I'd like something more grown-up and professional, and something I can use when I'm dressed casually on weekends without looking like a dork.

I'm contemplating one of the bags from m0851, like this one:

These are about $400; I'm hoping they'll get cheaper after the holidays. Matsu carries them in Boston. m0851 used to be called Rugby North America, and the bags look great but are made of a very thin leather; I'm worried about stuffing them full of heavy things. Also interesting is this industrial felt bag from Carga:

It definitely looks cool, although it might be too out there.

Any ideas for something else that isn't a leather briefcase but isn't from Chrome, Timbuk2, Jack Spade, etc.? I really work out of my bag in libraries, cafes, offices, and so on, so finding a good balance would be huge!

I'll buy your Filson or Jack Spade if they aren't working out for you. That smaller size works better for me anyway.

After some searching, I bought a black Timbuk2 commute laptop bag. It holds a laptop, charger, and two thousand-page books comfortably. It's black on black, so it goes with everything. It's held up well so far. One of the priorities is to protect my laptop from the elements and it seems to do the job well. Pricey, but good value IMO.

Damn... beat me to it.

Lets split the price and share the bag. I'll have it Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays and you'll have it Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. Sunday will be decided by a random number generator, upon which an even result will give me the bag, and an odd result will give you the bag. In the unlikely event of a zero, ownership of the bag will be determined by a paper-rock-scissors competition.
You're job is to find a deliverer that can overnight between Texas and Chicago 4 times a week.

I can see no flaws in this plan.

Ken, you're tearing us apart.

Mrjosh, you might want to check previous season Varvatos bags. They'll be in the $200-400 range, I believe. They come in an array of sizes and shapes.

Mrjosh, as per forum rules you gotta post the available bags on buy sell first

Okay, sounds good; I'll stick everything up on buy/sell so that everyone has a fair go. It never even occurred to me to sell these--but if there's demand there's supply / if you build it they will come / etc.!

How would I go about tracking down those older Varvatos bags? I've seen LA Guy mention them--how would I find them?

EBay. They usually come up every week or so. You can setup a Favorite Search and eBay will email you whenever it pops up. You might also consider one of the many online custom leathermakers. They are usually very reasonably priced, probably around $3-400 for a bag of your size. Unfortunately, few forum members have ventured into this territory so you won't find many referrals.
