So, it's almost Christmas, and I've decided that this year I am going to get myself a single useful bag or briefcase on sale afterwards. I have a few bags already, but none of them seem to fit the bill in terms of utility and looks. What are the alternatives? Here's what I have now:
#1 Filson Twill Briefcase
I've had this for years and it's a great bag. Problem: it's too small, it gets a little beat up, and it's not comfortable to wear over the shoulder like a messenger bag would be. You can't comfortably wear it because the strap is too narrow.
#2 Jack Spade Waxwear Messenger
Mine is more green in color and is about five years old; I got it at a sample sale in NYC and it has a great patina. Problem: it's too small and doesn't have a handle.
#3 Patagonia Critical Mass

Problem: this bag is *huge*, plus I'm not a bike messenger. I use this when I ride my bike.
None of these are really doing the job. I'm a grad student in English lit., and so I haul around a laptop and a bunch of books. All day I'm crisscrossing campus to where I'm meeting students, teaching classes, meeting professors, etc. When I was an undergrad I used a big Timbuk2 bag, and I miss being able to haul around a lot of stuff comfortably. But I'd like something more grown-up and professional, and something I can use when I'm dressed casually on weekends without looking like a dork.
I'm contemplating one of the bags from m0851, like this one:
These are about $400; I'm hoping they'll get cheaper after the holidays. Matsu carries them in Boston. m0851 used to be called Rugby North America, and the bags look great but are made of a very thin leather; I'm worried about stuffing them full of heavy things. Also interesting is this industrial felt bag from Carga:
It definitely looks cool, although it might be too out there.
Any ideas for something else that isn't a leather briefcase but isn't from Chrome, Timbuk2, Jack Spade, etc.? I really work out of my bag in libraries, cafes, offices, and so on, so finding a good balance would be huge!
