Does anybody know the difference, if any, between a "g-string" and a "thong"? And just what exactly does the "g" in "g-string" stand for?

My girlfriend and I have a bet going on this, the details of which are best left unmentioned.

I say they're the same thing, and that the "g" stands for "groin".

Anybody have any ideas??

A G-string has a front triangle covering the groin which is connected by elastic strings.

A Thong has a front triangle covering the groin which is connected by flat panels (usually quite narrow) which are wider than strings.

I'm pretty good at "whats". For "whys", it's MAnton's or Andy's turn. Although I hear Chuck has a great degree of familiarity with the subject of G-strings. He's from Texas, you know. I hear that G-strings are their weapon of choice for shooting rolling tumbleweeds.

Amazingly, my book does not have an underwear chapter. I would add one, but it would unbalance the table of contents.

A g-string is a bathing suit that certain women are qualified to wear. A thong is a type of sandal more commonly called a "flip-flop", another type of thong is the leather strap that Thor (the Norse god of thunder) suspended his hammer from.

Dr. Tom: I think even Thor would approve of this being termed a Thong.

I think that a thong is underworn worn by civillians, a g-string is a costume worn by pros.

We both agreed that j's wikipedia link was the definitive answer, and therefore we have called it a draw, and the status quo reigns.

Thanks for your input.
