Hello and welcome to Wythe Country.

FW'20 Slow West is slowly tumbling out across retailers and their own website (including NMWA)

From @dieworkwear's seminal blog Die, Workwear! in which he chronicles the death of workwear, he states:

"Peter Middleton’s new line, Wythe, freely mixes city and country, workwear and prep, dressy and casual. As a young man growing up in Texas, he spent summers in New York and rejected westernwear and prep as clothing for an older generation. It wasn’t until he moved to New York City that he started to see these clothes in a new light. “There was something different about the way guys on the Upper East Side wore their old Luccheses,” he says. “It had such a different attitude than the square-toed, rubber-soled boots I saw growing up. I saw people mixing different styles in a way I had never seen before. After a few years here, I started to really find my groove. I mixed vintage Lee Storm Riders with tailoring, oxford shirts with vintage British militaria. Wythe isn’t really about westernwear, but I think each season will always have a sort of nod to my background growing up in Texas.”

Wearing the olive moleskin shirt right now! I'll probably grab and OCBD in the future and maybe another moleskin shirt - they're great.

Really digging this brand. It seems like a lot of people sized incorrectly on the moleskin shirts. Is L equivalent to a 40?
Not that I'll likely be able to track one down at this point anyway ha

I'm between a 40 and a 42 (medium/large 5'11" 170lbs). I could make the medium work, especially unbuttoned. I prefer the look of the large though.

I’m a 42, wear a L normally, and the L fits me. Not sure how so many people got this wrong.

I’ll be the first to throw down something critical. Just saw the Shetland sweaters dropped and are... made in Madagascar?

What’s the sell on a $200 Shetland sweater that is made in Madagascar when you can get a Scottish-made one around the same price.

And what’s with the copy proudly proclaiming the yarn is shipped from Scotland to Madagascar? Seems like a bit of an environmental waste in light of local production facilities.

Peter said that the sweaters are made in Madagascar upfront during the 10/9 NMWA drop video. The lady who leads operations there was thus able to find employment for the local women who knit these sweaters, or so he said. So that's the sell.

Thanks. I hadn’t seen the video or realized that Wythe was on NMWA yet. I also appreciate the ethical consumerism pitch especially as it relates to fair labor, gender equity, etc.

That said—and looking at these on the NMWA website drove this home—I cannot wrap my head around Wythe’s Madagascar-made shetlands going for $215 vs. Jamieson’s Scottish-made ones at $155-165. At a glance it looks like labor rates in Madagascar are less than 10% of those in the U.K. (caveat that the U.K. numbers will be skewed by income inequality). Obviously it would be great if those women were being paid U.K. labor rates but I’m skeptical.

At the end of the day, companies will charge what the market will bear but the marketing on this rubs me the wrong way, especially the stuff about shipping wool from Scotland to Africa (compare to Jamieson’s farm-to-machine pitch).
