WW Chan in HK vs. Zegna MTM

Hello everyone:

So I got a job in HK and I figured that after months of gathering up whatever sartorial knowledge I can on these forums I would finally venture into the world of bespoke/mtm. I have only had otr suits before, mostly Boss and RLBL, so my experiences will be next to none. From what I gathered WW Chan is bespoke and they do have a large collection of fabrics, zegna included, and for their value and the fact that I will be in HK for the longterm its probably a good starting point to venture into bespoke.

On the contrary, due to my limited experience trying on a style I like and then having it tailored at Zegna might be a good idea as well. What I wanted to inquire was the quality of the respective suits, if I were to use similar fabrics, in details and construction, and which one would you recommend?

Gratefully,

Victor

I would go to Chan, particularly if you're living in HK. The suit will almost certainly fit you better than anything rtw or mtm and you'll have a greater range of choice.

Another vote for Chan here. I don't have any direct experience with Zegna MTM, but I have two of their mainline RTW suits. The quality is great, but I'd guess Zegna MTM will be about double the price of Chan (somebody correct me if I'm wrong) and at those prices I'd much rather have Chan.

This has to be correct.

Chan make a better suit than mainline EZ. Better stitching, more handwork, better button-holes. Everything is better.

Go out and try on suits from Zegna, Brioni, Isaia, etc and get a feel for what you like. Look at fabrics, button stances, lapel width, gorge height, etc. and details like side adjusters and ticket pockets to get a gauge in what you want.

But in the end you should go to Chan. It's a great opportunity to build a long term relationship with a tailor. Tell him you want a very nice, but basic 2B suit in a solid charcoal or navy. Have some ideas of what you like, but let him guide you.

From there you can build your rotation as you see how the first suit fits and get ideas on what you want next.
