I will be heading off to shanghai to get a blazer commissioned by WW Chan but i am stuck between a dilemma of a a blue blazer or a black cordoruy jacket. The black corduroy jacket i intend to be used for nights out on town, with a pair of jeans and the blue blazer possibly at work.
I live in singapore and travel around asia on a frequent basis but due to the economic crisis travel has been restricted and i dont envision traveling frequently in the near future, in addition most of my co-workers who are older than me rarely, if ever wear jackets to work, so i may feel awkward when im in a jacket and my senior co-workers are not, in this situation what would be a better buy?

Thanks

I don't like corduroy as an evening fabric. Too rustic.

I think the blue blazer would be more useful. Would you go for the full brass button look?

Just a thought, but brown cord blazers are IMO great for casual wear. It's somewhat of a gaping hole in my wardrobe right now, but I have some other holes I'd like to patch first before I make the jump.

But to wear out at night? A navy blue jacket makes more sense in that application--it's also more useful in general.

Good point. I wouldn't be inclined to wear one at night, just saying on a general level. I would recommend a navy blazer since it's the essence of staple-wear, but I wouldn't want to pair it with raw denim. I'd consider navy blazer, with charcoal raw denim for a night out. But this would greatly depend on the shades of the jacket/jeans combo, and how the rest of the outfit was styled. Depending on the elegance of the evening, I can see throwing on a bottle green velvet blazer with appropriate jeans to step out.

If you're not going the brass button route, perhaps a mother of pearl? Nice contrast with the navy fabric.

A dark green double-breasted corduroy shawl-collared dinner jacket (Scholte, 1959.) Dinner trousers in navy herringbone wool and cashmere (H. Harris, New York, 1956.)

How about a brushed cotton twill in navy (I think there are some very nice Zegna fabrics that they have), either unlined (other than the sleeves) or quarter / butterfly lined as a split-the-difference alternative? Great soft hand, cotton, so should work well in a tropical climate, works really well with a casual outfit and can be dressed up reasonably well. Perhaps isn't quite as formal as a classic blue blazer, but much more versatile for casual wear. Last time I saw WW Chan, Patrick had one exactly like that - fabulous jacket that looked great. He apparently uses it to go out and for his flights. His was unlined with scarlet interior edging that was both dramatic and entirely appropriate. I believe that he also had a ticket pocket edged with in a similar color (don't know what the fabric was). Truly a superb look and a great advertisement for the workmanship that WW Chan can produce.

Yea, wear that at your own risk. Someone will beat you to death on the streets.
