Have you ever played hockey in Canada? Drinking beer (regardless of the brand, even that watery beer-flavoured water you call Coors) is as much a part of hockey as bench clearing brawls and puck bunnys.

Outside of professional/minor hockey in Canada you'd be hard pressed to find hockey games (whether it be in an arena or on a lake) where <50% of the team is already gooned up before the puck drops.

Hell, I drank before playing broomball (which, by the way, is a completely rediculous game).

Haha we called it 'hoop hockey' (you use a stick and a little hoop as a puck) in grade school in Jersey... My point was that Canadians drinking crappy Coors beer is thier version of hipsters drinking $5 PBRs in Norcal. When I visited Ontario we were drinking homebrew and it was awesome.

Could someone explain to me, very briefly, what the difference between North American and European hockey is?

Nah, you're thinking ringette (girls sport in Canada).

Broomball is exactly what it sounds like, everyone has a broom and wears shoes on the ice and smacks around a big rubber ball. You basically have to be drunk to play or else it just seems marsupialed.

And yes, Coors has become a hipster beer up her for some rediculous reason. I never understood how hipsters think crappy beer = cool. I'm all for the girls boozing on the ice, just wished they had picked a better beer.

It started with Carling Black Label in the late '80s. Prior to that Black Label was an old man's beer best known for the tag line, "Hey Mabel, Black Label!"

But in the '80s the hipsters in Toronto began to drink Black Label as it was cheap as hell and you could track your beer at a party. Since everyone else was drinking Upper Canada if you saw some guy holding a bottle of Black Label you knew it was yours and could stomp him with your docs. Realizing that they were on to something the brewery relaunched the beer in what was one of the greatest advertising 180's in history: "The Legend is Black."

Euro hockey is all about finesse, speed and setting up tick-tack-toe plays. North American hockey is more about power, being aggressive (going after the puck) and physicality (checking/fighting). This is a very general explanation.

I'm sure if a) that's true or b) you made it up but either way, neat story.

Personally I'm a fan of beer advertised by child molesters.

Which is not to say that they can't intermingle well.

Perhaps it's because so many Europeans play in the NHL now, but their teams can definetly get pretty physical when required (contrary to some sterotypical views that European players are 'pussies').

Didn't Toronto hipsters migrate over to Red Baron from Black Label? Personally I stuck with the Upper Canada Dark, most people in late 1980s- early '90s Toronto did not get dark beer.
