What is the benefit of chainstitching the hems?

I once asked Brandon at 3sixteen whether getting the chainstitch was worthwhile and he told me not at all. But seems people here really value it.

yeah that roping effect of a chainstitched hem just looks better than a basic hem once it's been washed a bunch of times.

That's exactly it. I got my last couple pairs of denim (one raw, one one-wash) hemmed by an inexpensive local tailor, and I am regretting it now that they've been washed a few times and there's almost no roping at the hem.
