If I could sweet-talk DerekS out of his maroon pants (and don't think I couldn't), seen here:

(or if I could get my hands on a similar pair) would they be a good combo with my dove gray herringbone silk-linen jacket, seen here? Please vote.

I can't see you being comfortable wearing red pants man. I am just barely comfortable wearing red pants.

I don't know if this changes anyone's mind, but Derek's slacks are maroon, not red. I KNOW that red pants aren't for me, but I thought maroon might be a nice alternative to what I normally wear with that particular sport coat.

    Do you not? :)

Personally I would consider "Dove Grey" to be too pale, almost stark, in comparison to the maroon. The upper half needs some kind of texture or pattern to counter-balance the boldness. In this respect tweeds are a good choice.

Edit: This is also the reason that navy is a traditional pairing, it is bold enough to equal the red. Most other colours are not.

I may be in the minority here, but I like it. Think Spoo may have nailed it though, can't see you being comfortable in red pants.

I guess I'm in the severe minority. I like it and think you can pull it off.

Red pants a great - always loved them with a navy sports coat. However I like your combination too.

Aren't red pants considered pretty classic? Sure they're not something you see every day, but it's not SO out there that you would need to be a super-confident and experimental dresser... especially if we're talking about maroon. Maroon cords, for example, are pretty tame, no? Am I completely wrong?

The first time I bought red pants I returned them because it was a little out of my comfort zone and my wife thought it was weird, but I got another pair and I doubt they'll be my last.

I think pairing red tones with the right jacket can be challenging because red is such an intense color on the spectrum, but there should be many blue and grey options that would work. The tan/brown jackets can fight with the red, but even they don't look completely bad to me.

TB - I think you should go find some maroon pants and live your life to the fullest!

quite right, but I am a follower of this school of thought

But, seriously, show me a pic of red pants done well where the wearer is not a very attractive young woman
