Would you pair this belt and shoes?

Hi Guys,

I've only recently become interested in trying to become more 'fashionable' and I'm reading tips from you guys everyday, which is fantastic for me.

I do have a question though. I believe a belt should be matched to your shoes, and I was wondering if I would get away with this.

As you can see, in the picture with me wearing them, I think they look okay? But close up, they are definitely two different colours. Do you think I'd be safe?

Ignore the chino fit, tailor is adjusting them tomorrow for me.

Thanks in advance.

The contrasting colours shown are perfectly fine casually, as you have demonstrated. Great photos! Keep up the good work. Welcome to Styleforum mrbez

Not with a suit. If the colours were closer it would be fine as they need not match perfectly. If I had no belt to match the shoes, I would wear no belt. Also, I am not a fan of the buckle. It is too garish for a suit. If you insist on wearing this belt with a suit, 99% of people outside SF will probably never even notice, let alone care...that is, except for secret SF operatives walking the earth who will clock you in an instant. Lucky for you our numbers are too small. The odds will be in your favour that you will get away with it.

Haha, thank you very much for your help.

In terms of finding a belt that matches. Just take the shoes shopping with me?

These will probably be the shoes that I will wear with a navy suit to my graduation.

Thanks.

Good idea. You won't have to find an identical colour match; close enough will do. A belt with a nice subtle grain is always good.

They look like they will work together. However, I am not a big fan of the buckle.

Shoes and belt do not have to match, the belt's style is slightly too casual, the pants look black (which would be a no-no almost in itself), and there's too much color contrast between the pants and the brown. Short answer: a dark brown belt would be better.

While I hate to sound like Bill Lumbergh, "I'm going to have to disagree with you on that one...yeahhhhh...." To me, those shoes are clearly walnut in color (at least based on my monitor) and the belt isn't. Walnut belts are found very easily and I'd look for one with a more appropriate/conservative buckle that is a better match to the shoes (but not necessarily a perfect match). As well, I agree that that pants are too dark. To me, Walnut tends to look best with navy, a contrasting brown, or a grey/charcoal. Those pants almost look black. After reading this forum for many months, I rarely ever wear black pants.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
