i've never heard a coat referred to as a chesterfield. in the circles i run around in , a chesterfield is what an old person calls a couch... or if you're in Canada and the people you run around with are old, they call it a Davenport.

I really like the Calvin Klein topcoats/trenches i've seen browsing magazines like VF on my breaks at Target.

I was unsure what classifies a coat as a chesterfield. I am specifically looking for a single breast one. Velvet collar is optional. The one in the display at club monaco actually made me venture into the store, only to realize that its retailing for $1000. I never knew that club monaco was aiming for that type of consumer... They had slim black and indigo unbranded selvage jeans(raw) that were made in the usa btw! You learn something new everyday.

I bought mine here on SF. Keep an eye on ebay. In general outerwear is undervalued there, especially if you get off the designer brands. Most coats are made of very durable fabric so they tend to age very well.

yup, you're right on the option of SB and DB here's a quote from AAAC quoting Flusser:
In the Mantonian absence, I'll cite Flusser, on page 282 of Dressing the Man: "CHESTERFIELD: A plain-back, slightly shaped overcoat in either single-breasted fly front or double-breasted style. In dark grey, blue, or black, it may have a matching velvet or soft collar. The coat is named for a nineteenth-century Earl of Chesterfield."
And I endorse ebay - I got some rather nice NWT $600-800 BB's for about $150 each. One should be able to find them cheaper near the end of the winter, I think.
