Wool Tie Strangulation?

Anyone else feel strangled by wool/cashmere ties, when worn with shirts that take silk ties just fine? I.e., it's not that the collar is too small; somehow it's the tie. I get it sometimes with linen, too, but not as much.

What causes this?

- Yes! The fabric does not move as well around the neck.. & the added bulk is uncomfortable which is why I try & only wear silk or cotton knit ties. I have a black cashmere thinking I would wear it for a cocktail but nope, it just stays hanging there strangling it self..

Is it friction, or is it somehow that silk has more "give" and sort of stretches and contracts as you move?

Wool ties, although not linen ones, tend if anything to be stretchier than silk. I don't buy the friction argument (I don't buy this thread), but bulk may have something to do with it.

How strange... I quite frequently wear a wool tie but have never noticed any difference like this.

Well, I have noticed it many times. But it is inconsistent. Today, however, I am wearing one that is driving me nuts.

Perhaps you should treat this as a good excuse to go out and buy a new tie?

Maybe there is more "give" with silk. Not so much stretching as wool would stretch more but silk seems to be more.. "springy." So when I tie a silk knot, it tends to uncompress and loosen a bit throughout the day.

And these avatars are getting ridiculous. I thought you were talking to yourself for a minute.

Perhaps it's the pattern, not the material.
