Wool for Suits

Other factors being equal, there’s a tradeoff between the relative durability of wool with lower S-numbers and the relative softness/fineness of wool with higher S-numbers, isn't there? I understand, of course, that the S-number is not the only way of categorizing wool (ounces, for instance). But do people have any preferences? How low would you go in selecting a wool fabric for a suit? How high? Opinions? Advice?
