Wooden hangers causing yellow discoloration on my shirt collars; should I use metal?

I've never experienced this. Were these particularly cheap wooden hangers?

And I don't use metal or wooden hangers for shirts, I use plastic hangers.

Are you sure the discoloration isn't from sweat stains and dirt? If you're wearing the shirts multiple times between washings, that's probably your issue. If not, ummm, weird. I have a lot of cheap, wooden hangers and have never had issues with them.

100%. I also use plastic hangers for my shirts. Wooden are used for suits and jackets/coats. Change it up bro!

Well if there's no discolouration under the shoulders then it's a possible explanation. Sweat is the most likely explanation or possibly scorching from ironing. You can hand wash your collars to get them really clean or soak them in a stronger solution of detergent before putting in the washing machine.

I had this happen to my shirts if the collars were sweaty when I took them off and hung them up. Some of the brown "finish" on the wooden hanger rubbed off onto my shirt collars. You should get natural cedar hangers, or just roll up the shirts and put them in a hamper for washing.

I had this happen when I bought some wooden hangers from ebay which were around the same price range, switched to the IKEA ones which are only slightly more expensive and haven't had the problem since.. metal ones would be just as good though I imagine.

I've been using IKEA wood hangers for years. Never had a problem.

Regardless of whether the wood is leaving marks, DO NOT switch to metal, because those definitely can leave marks! If you must use wire/metal hangers, try to make sure they are fabric- or paper-covered.

I use three different kinds:
- thick plastic hangers from Walmart for all my collared shirts (the thickness helps keeps the collars from getting crushed flat, and I put a shower ring in between each hanger so they can't get pressed together and crease the collars that way)
- paper-covered metal hangers for my tees (thicker hangers are a waste of space on tees, but if you have the room....)
- wooden hangers for my suits & sport jackets (not all of them have the big rounded shoulders but someday!)

I use the cheap Ikea wood ones but I saw a decent primer yesterday on hangers over at valet.

I'll be buying some of these for shirts next time I can make the trip.
