Women: OK to leave belt loops beltless?

For men, certainly, the consensus is that if the garment in question has belt loops a belt must be worn but does this apply to women as well? I think so, but I see that many women often leave the loops of casual wear like jeans and shorts beltless.

I don't think it's a consensus that items with belt loops require belts. A quick look at the WAYWN thread on S&D revealed only one post describing a belt and it was kitonbrioni with no picture. As far as girls go, I think it's kind of random. I see a lot of girls running around w/o belts but some of them use them as a weird accessory way above the waist...

It's strange. A year or so ago I wouldn't have cared about going beltless with jeans. Now I can't go without one. *shrug*

Usually at workplaces the only rule is, "If it has belt loops, wear one." I would never go without one with more formal trousers, obviously. I don't think women should be an exception. I even think that about those tacky 3/4 sleeve coats they make for them... they tend to look shrunken since the coat length is already at the hip.

Yes, I think it applies to women.

I can remember one situation where a woman was wearing jeans without a "typical" belt, but instead chose to wear a decorative belt that sat on her hips. I thought it looked pretty odd that her belt loops were clearly visibile even though she was wearing a belt. I think her outfit would have looked better if the loops were not visible.

At any rate, I agree with the mantra mentioned above: "If it has belt loops, wear one."

I think it's OK for both women and men who are aiming for the ultra-casual look. I don't do it, though.

Good call, grabbing women is always a good thing. Men should definitely wear belts if they have belt loops. I can make an exception for Women if the outfit permits it (or offers a reasonable alternative).

ladies, try sliping a sash through the loops.
if you dont like belts, then remove the loops.

They would look wrong like the jeans without back pockets. Ugh. I rarely wear a belt with jeans, and I cannot remember the last time my wife wore a belt at all.

First, women, even when wearing a dressy "pant suit" have stepped down the formality ladder (from dress or skirt) to being more casual and so have option to "decorate" around waistline or obscure away under a blouse. Further, female slacks are designed and worn differently in that they fit around the body, rather drape as men's trousers do from the waist line.

So, except when wearing traditional "straight-leg" (not the baggy cargo and carpenter style) blue jeans, its just more likely men's pants will need to be cinched with a belt for a clean look.

As to those blue jeans, well, it has been ages since I ever laced any belt around mine. So I'd say when so dressed its o.k. to run around without one.

Ok, this is simple to figure out.

Jeans/Shorts/pants: most definitely ok. If the overall style requires a breakup in colour, some definition, or you have fancy belt loops to show off, belts are great. [Like in my avatar]

Dresses and skirts, if it has a belt space, you probably need a belt. Not mandatory, but often helps the way the dress sits.

Belts are an accessory, some styles need them some styles don't. I'm a fan of belts on pants/shorts/denim skirts, but not on dresses. Sashes are good for dressed [not those fugly leather tiearound ones i see everywhere this season.]

Also, though i find it fugly, some girls want their jeans to be almost falling off to make the best use of their thong exposure.

so yeh i had this experience yesterday with an Eastern Suburbs mum wearing a brown thong, over her shorts. IF I CAN SEE STRETCH MARKS THEN THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG!
