Women: clumpy mascara

This has become a recent pet peeve of mine. Just how difficult is it to avoid clumpy mascara? Are some women blessed with clump-free eyelashes (or maybe just longer eyelashes to begin with)? Does quality of mascara matter? If I see a woman with clumpy mascara should I suspect that she is either too poor to purchase quality mascara, incompetent at applying it or what?

Seeing clumpy mascara in real life is one thing but I also see it all the time in advertisements. This should be unacceptable in professional photography.

I think it should be unacceptable by any standard. It looks distinctly lower-class. From my observations, not all women suffer from this problem.

Women who pluck their eyebrows excessively should be sentenced to hard labor until their natural eyebrows grow back in.

I can't address the issue of clumpy mascara in advertising, but a few comments about mascara in general: I use Lancome, but I also get Maybelline, L'Oreal and the like in a pinch. What I find is that they do dry out, not matter how expensive, some in as few as 10 days, hence the clumpy look if you don't have time to go buy new mascara or don't wish to pay $6-$25 every couple of weeks. I know you're not supposed to do that, but while on a trip with no time to go shopping, I have been known to add a few drops of non-oily make up remover to "liquify" the dark substance...
