Was wondering what peoples thoughts are on the best winter parka... while not in the arctic circle it does get quite cold in New England. Have looked at Canada Goose for a while but seems to be q bit of hate for the brand now that it has become so popular... have also looked in to Nobis, Yves Solomon, Mackage.

I have a number of Arc'teryx jackets, but didn't really love the fit of their parka options so that would be out for me. Mackage and Yves seem a bit fashion forward, Nobis was nice, very similar to CG... Heard of one called Triple Fat Goose which I think is supposed to be like CG without as much of a mark up but can't find much info on them in terms of people who own them.

Any others?

Norse Projects, maybe? And have you tried Arc'teryx's Veilance line?

It's the whole retro trend. I went into an Urban Outfitters while Christmas shopping and it's all stuff you would have gotten made fun of for wearing to school in the 90's. Btw they still wearing Pelle Pelle jackets in Detroit.

I have a CG chilliwack and got it in bright red, cuz **** being subtle when you're wearing a jacket that everybody recognizes anyways. It suits me because I often just want to throw a jacket over a t shirt and not be cold. It's loud but not gore tex loud. I do get a lot of compliments while wearing it but that probably has a lot to do with people knowing what it cost. I also like that it's not made of that typically puffer coat material that gets a burn hole because you passed a person smoking for half a second.

I went through this a few years ago. I didn't want to wear what most others on the streets were wearing (Canada Goose, Nobis, Moose Knuckles, Nobis, Parajumpers, Mackage, I'm sure I'm missing a couple), I'm not a fan of Moncler, and I couldn't justify paying full retail for an Arc'teryx Veilance jacket.

I feel like all of these winter jacket/coat brands are comparable in quality. Most of them will withstand winds of up to at least -15~ Celsius (because let's face it, most city dwellers don't need the ones that can protect you up to -30C) and have an excellent warranty.

But to answer your question, I'll name some brands that haven't been mentioned yet:

- Fjallraven - more than just a bag brand, they also make outerwear. I bought one during my search but I had buyer's remorse because of the hood dwarfing my head when worn.
- Eddie Bauer: You may laugh, but if you can dig their designs, they're relatively affordable and get the job done. And they have lifetime warranty.
- Outdoor Survival Canada, or their urban sublabel OSC Cross: another Canadian coat manufacturer that doesn't get nearly as much love as some of the others, mostly due to their lack of marketing. I daresay they're on par with Canada Goose. If I hadn't found my evential winter jacket, I likely would have gone with them.
- F/CE: a Japanese brand that makes some pretty good outerwear. Not that easy to find, however.
- Norwegian Rain: a SF darling that incorporates some nice functional elements into the design, yet you could pair it with almost any kind of outfit. After two years, I was fortunate to find a Norwegian Rain Bumfreezer jacket locally for a good price and it's my current go-to when it hits -5 to -10 degrees.

Unless you're a person who will walk outside in the biting wind for extended periods of time or works outside for a living, I'd say just pick something that you like that fits your budget, whether it's because of the design, the brand's story, or whatever. Even if it's Canada Goose.

Wow.....haven’t heard Triple Fat Goose mentioned in over 25 years! That was the flyest **** back in my hood....cats used to rock it inside-out for the look!

I think International Clothiers still sells them too...

Have you looked into the brand Quartz Co.? I have a Canada Goose Parka, a Nobis and a Quartz Co. and the Quartz Co. is probably my favorite of the bunch. I like it enough that I used to have 2 CG jackets and sold one in favor of the Quartz. Co.

@KaleidescopicK

Thx for the tip on Outdoor Survival Canada. Any info on their sizing? The Desna coat looks great. I can’t stand Canada Goose so have been looking for an alternative

Not sure what you find to be too fashion forward with Yves Salomon but I can say that it's very warm. If you get one with a black fur lining it looks pretty much like any other parka.

How do you like your Nobis? I was looking at their down bomber but don’t know how they fit.

I really my nobis, quality seems on par with the others and sizing may be a tad smaller than the Canada goose but that could be due to the different styles in jacket.

The parka I tried on felt like it was TTS, but I don't remember the model.

Sorry that I'm not of much help here. I suggest contacting the company directly, or a stockist. I tried on OSC Cross at Frances Watson in Toronto.
