I'm not sure what the impedance is on these compared to typical cheapo cans. Any experience?

http://www.gradolabs.com/product_pages/sr80.htm 32 ohm, should be ok without amp.... but then ipod sound sucks anyway.. EDIT: i have a sennheiser 595 (50ohm) and it's ok plugged in straight to a normal SB X-Fi soundcard and another on-board. Window's master volumn at ******* 10% is plenty already though =S........ But I do it with the amp anyway.

The main problem is the onboard sound on my motherboard -- it seems inordinately quiet.

Hard to say about motherboards, but i don't think 32ohm need that big of a boost. In fact i think it should be on the loud side more than quiet side provided u have the drivers and **** all figured out... i could hear a lot of ******* static on the on board.... i m not even sure if it will wreck my headphones lol..

I would use an amp. I can't speak for soundcards, but the iPod is only going to give you, in theory, 0.8W. You might have a decent listening level, but the dynamics on non-compressed-to-hell music will suffer.
