Will London have big sales in January?

It's clear, with all the massive discounting already going on, that the days just after Xmas are going to represent a huge shopping opportunity here in the States.

But I'm going to be in London in mid-January (arriving the 12th for a week).

Am I better off saving my ducats to spend them in London? Or will sales be over by then, and the huge bargains be gone?

I do realize there is no "right" answer but would happily invite your speculation!

I would go with hell yeah. UK economy feeling the pinch, plus - and correct me if I am wrong, I am no Forex expert - but the USD has strengthened significantly against the GBP in recent months, which makes a big difference to your buying power.

I've been to London a couple of times the past few weeks, discounting seemed to be fairly limited. Whether this implies that there will be brilliant offers in january or that the amount of sales overall will be limited, I have no idea. (It might also be a clear sign of me visiting the wrong shops!)

I'm moving to London in January and have to build a decent professional wardrobe fairly quickly, so I surely hope there will be a few good offers around.

well of course there are always sales in January, and I would expect after what is probably going to be a terrible Christmas in terms of sales (Alastair Darling certainly seems to think it will be) I would expect bigger than usual sales.

The last couple of years they have started sales early, as in in the week or so before Christmas. As the chap above comments I would also not be surprised if the reductions are bigger than usual...A gentleman even told me in Crockett & Jones on Jermyn street that they'll be having a sale there on the 27th.

OK-- cross-post from LL. Does anyone know of a good source of field jackets (e.g., Chrysalis) in London? I'll be rolling through for a few days in January.

There's a Barbour store on Regent Street and one close by on Piccadilly too.

In general terms, you owe yourself a stroll down Savile Row, the Burlington Arcade, Jermyn Street, and St James.

For heavy-duty sales, there will always be Harrod's, and the main department stores up Regent Street and Oxford Street.

+ Regent St, Bond St, Selfridges, Harvey Nichols and a few good shops around Sloane Sq.
