Why soporific?

Has soporific always been the SF-preferred term for conservative modes of dress? If so, why? It seems unlikely that "sleep-inducing" is really the best label available for classic, understated modes of dress. Granted, the most popular alternative, conservative, has unfortunate political connotations, but I still prefer it over soporific. Perhaps it would be worthwhile to search for a better term?

I always understood that the term "soporific" was being used in jest. Most of what I see posted in the soporific tie pr0n thread are elegant, luxurious, classicaly-styled ties that are very exciting when skillfully executed.

Not all soporific stuff is conservative. Agnelli's mottled wool ties with dark business suits aren't conservative, but they are soporific.

I have it on the best authority that it was always intended as a joke. OP, search for the CBD and you'll see that Manton had a thread about that long before the soporific thread started.
