Why no handmade fashion magazines?

It seems there would be a passionate, loyal fan base for fine quality, handmade clothes and high end fashion. I'm not aware of any magazines that have exactly this perspective...yet there are so many magazines for every other subject.

Does anyone else wonder why there is not Sartorial Magazine?

Or are there ones in Europe I not familiar with.

Esquire and GQ occasionally have decent articles but they tend to be very trendy and have less focus on quality.

Hi,

the reply is so simple: the shoes specialists of bespoke make the estimation of 1000-1500 clients around the world ..... §§§§ no more explanation needed ???

One would have to conclude that there's not a demand for it. That's too bad but in many ways the forums serve that purpose. Just look at the Kiton shoes thread, which is the equal of most magazine articles on refined shoes.

kitonbrioni's point about the various fora is well taken. I don't think there are other possible sources that could delve into the minutiae so deeply and consistently. (I was very glad to see that Kiton shoe thread pop up and take off this evening.) Still, pictures are pictures and sometimes nothing else can take their place. The Japanese shoe magazine LAST invariably has great features and even ventures above the feet occasionally. There used to be some good posts here with scanned images from LAST, don't know if they survived the crash. There is also a French magazine called Trepointes (I believe). You might be able to find out something about that by following Georges' link to souliers.net (which you will probably want to visit if you haven't already).

We're talking about clothes, not shoes. There are plenty of magazines for feet fetishists all around the world.

a friend showed me this site www.designingme.org which i think he got from a magazine. It lets you create your own tailor-made shirts with an attractive price tag. I mention this one site cause i have seen a few other sites that offer similar things from magazines like GQ, but this one does not have the exuberant prices, plus its more fun and has better choices.

First, the demand doesn't exist. Second, a magazine could not be supported by advertising by the bespoke makers since their marketing efforts are very limited.

However, this forum and the other fora have filled the limited demand for articles, information, and gossip regarding bespoke clothes.

GeorgesV,

That's a low number (and interesting one as well) no doubt however I wonder if there might be a low-cost way to satisfy demand.

I'm also an audiophile and there is a group of audiophiles who started a quality web-based review magazine called Positive Feedback. It's been a tremendous success even with many print audio magazines. It seems like we could create something similar.

The advertisers get space cheap in the margins of PF and I bet there would be enough interest given the lack of alternatives.

You could interview Ciro Paone, Isaia, Olga Berluti, Massimo Bizzocchi, Silvan Lattanzi, etc. Maybe discuss some details on quality construction...one month you do a suit jacket, next a well-made shoe, next the perfect pant....If there is limited demand then you go quarterly.

Just an idea...

Well, Artisan Fan, you may be just the one to get this particular ball rolling. I may take a bit of a jaundiced view here (since my wife has worked in magazine publishing for a long time), but such a venture would require a true obsessive, willing to cram ungodly amounts of time, energy and (shudder!)money into the maw of the beast. Published exclusively on-line and given every possible bit of good fortune you might break even after a few years. You could say I'm not a dreamer, I guess (although if you could find a very rich patron who shares your vision...).
Mark Seitelman is right to point out the vexing double-headed problem of low demand and limited advertising money. Much of the already low demand is slaked by fora such as these or else the occasional write-up in some aspirational vanity/glamour publication. The bespoke tradition has also, generally, taken pride in doing without advertising, following the artisanal tradition of living by referal and word-of-mouth.

Maybe the Italian Trade Council that advertised in this month's Esquire could provide some cash.
