Why is linen so unpopular in North America?

Linen came into popularity when the British occupied India and wore lots of linen (same in HK). The Dutch did the same in Indonesia. Linen is far more popular in climates that are humid or hot most of the time.

Most of the US is too seasonal for some to justify a linen wardrobe.

Toronto is often above 30C in the summer, and with the humidity it'll feel like the 40s. Linen is very appropriate.

This can be offset by prepping it out. Speaking of such complexions, I am suddenly seeing financial guys and news guys wearing nehru jackets and banded collared shirts, which makes me wonder if it isnt going to be the summer of Love, baby.

I'm brown and I'm almost always in a linen jacket in summer.

It is too bad that North American thinking excludes the appreciation for linen.
I have 3 linen shirts I wear in summer, wrinkles and all.
It is part of the charm of linen, and is completely acceptable.
I have one linen jacket, and none of my linen is ever dry cleaned.
I use the 'woolens -or- delicates' setting on my washer,
then let hang dry, after smoothing out whatever wrinkles i can while the items are still wet from the washer.
Once dry, I am ready to go again.
I may give my jacket a light ironing, but that is all.

A nice wrinkly linen shirt / jacket and a panama hat...classic.

Linen is lovely especially if you have a darker complexion...
I used to wear my linen suits all the time before I met my wife....
She struggles with the concept of linen ,by essence casual, being made into a suit...
Like every women ,she does like order making the wrinkles a definitive no no...

My wife loves linen, wrinkles and all. You just need to train yours a bit better.

I have tried iammatt...She starts to appreciate my suits and shoes but she is still watching my London trips with suspicion of a Stasi agent...
If the name Savile Row is pronounced in my phone conversation ,I'm up for waterboarding...

Yes, for about 3 to 4 months of the year in Southern Ontario linen works weather-wise -- I still reserve it for casual wear.
