Why does my button down shirt shrink along the buttons?

the shirt is cotton and there's a flap of material left of the buttons that continually shrinks and bends towards the buttons -- very unappealing. also the entire shirt shrinks somehow. i'm hang drying them too. not sure what's going on

Fabric shrinks. Get used to it.

No idea about the bit that bends towards the buttons. Got any pics? Sounds like a cheaply made shirt.

What temperature are you washing at? Cold wash will minimise shrinking, also if you iron the shirt while still damp you can try to stretch it back out again.

I've heard that the stitching thread shrinks differently than the woven fabric. But I thought it only occurs in high heat like in the drier.

Is this a, um, cheap shirt? If the manufacturer uses a cheap fusing material inside the collar, it could shrink at a different rate than the outer material (which I assume is cotton).

He's saying the edge of the placket is folding over the buttons. Iron it better. Or use starch to hold it in place. It's not a defect.
