Why do we cuff our jeans?

Beside the aesthetic reason of showing off selvage? Does it serve a practical purpose. I know this is a really well understood question by all here, but I just feel like I'm missing something.

inseam is too long... for me it's more out of necessatity than a conscious decision. I'm too lazy to get em' hemmed, also.

I like the look of cuffed jeans... it adds a little weight to the bottom of the pants, to balance an oversized belt buckle, for instance (which could appear top-heavy without cuffs).

correct me if i'm wrong, but i believe it was originally done b/c some jeans (if not most?) originally had one inseam size, so to keep them from dragging, you have to cuff them up.

I used to cuff when I was obsessed with selvedge, now im not and like many more details of jeans, but I just got some samurais and I really ought to cuff em but I feel abit self concious with cuffs now, even though selvedge jeans are the best to cuff if they are too long.

On a practical note, hemming will be stronger than any cuff when it comes down to scuffedge.

If you check out pics from the 50's and 60's, the jeans looked awesome. The look of jeans from back in the day are definitely an inspiration!

I cuff my SC 1947's for three reasons:

1) I really like this look.
2) Inseam is too long and I'm too lazy to get it hemmed.
3) Is there a better way to rock dungarees than the way Dean and the like did?
