Why do they try to sell you a bigger size suit?

Every time I walk into a suit store or a macys to look at suits they always try to sell me a suit thats two sizes bigger.

I am not a thin guy in any way. I usually wear a 46. I tried on a 46 yesterday and the guy says that I need a size 50. I tried it on and it looked honestly rediculous. I honestly looked like a clown. But the guy kept saying that its my size. There was about 8 inches of space in the suit and the armholes were half way down my side.

Am I honestly in denial?...or is there a reason for this?

Most salespeople are idiots. For the longest time I thought I was a 44T but in reality I was a 40-42Tall depending on the manf.

I find that you really have to have a good sense of fit yourself. I've been misdirected more times than not, so now I say "this is my fit preference."

Thats usually what I say. Its just that the guys can be kinda pushy sometimes. They make me almost feel like if im lying to myself about my size.

sometimes they are just idiots

sometimes its easier to slim down a suit than to bulking it up

Although you are correct about Macys, at this point its difficult for me to spend more than 5 or 6 hundred for a suit.

at significantly less than $500-$600 you can find an excellent suit with a fantastic cut. Take a peak at the Buying & Selling forum here at SF where on any given week you'll see BB Golden Fleece or RLBL (Corneliani/Made in Italy) suits at $300-$400. check out a Filene's Basement, STP, or a Syms (Hickey-Freeman @$400ish). Lots of places .. just need to do your homework.... and stay out of your local Macy's.

yeah, I usually wear a 43R jacket, went to get fitted at the Men's warehouse for a wedding tux, they gave me a 46L. Then the pants they got me were way too short on me too, I looked cartoonish in the tux. The person who measured me was ******.

Because they do not not know what they are doing. It is preferable to sell something that is too big than something that is too small which the sap will not be able to wear because he cannot actually get in it.

suit one size too small because the guy said the shoulders are supposed to stick out a little and fall straight down the arm

I'm guessing, maybe they have had bad experiences with people washing their suits and coming back to complain that the suit no longer fits?

Fo serious. A guy at BB once told me I'd need a 41L, when in reality, I'm probably a 37-38 MAX. Not to derail the thread, but other than H&M, where should I look for suits that would fit slim on someone who is 6'1", 150 lbs., 37" chest. I know I'm a scrawny mofo, so don't tell me to go eat a sandwich. I eat a ton already.
