on blazers and coats?

and also, if you cannot see that it's sewn shut, is there any reason to cut them open again? I like them shut b/c then I'm not tempted to jam my hands into pockets. I'm worried if I use the pockets it'll ruin the shape.

They know you're a pocket-pool player.

Oh, you mean those pockets . . .
That's standard practice. I believe it's so they don't get stretched out or catch on anything during shipment/display/sale. It also keeps people from sticking their hands in there while trying on the suit/jacket. There's no reason to cut them open if you don't want to use them as pockets. Keeping them shut does help preserve a sleeker shape, because (as you noted) you won't start jamming your hands in their or do other things that may eventually cause them to gape open.

One of the main reasons that I wear a jacket is for it to hold my stuff.

And I often rest my hands in the pockets.

Trouser pockets are good for big items that are large enough or heavy enough to break the jacket's line. Jacket pockets are good for little items, especially those handed to you by women.

There's something satisfying about letting something drop into a pocket that's basically free-floating from the rigidity of the jacket, and there's something elegant about lifting a flap to get things in and out. And don't even get me started on the fun of keeping tickets in your ticket pocket!

I have never seen the pockets sewn shut on any pants, new or otherwise. Interestingly, the pockets on most of the jackets I get at teh thrift are still sewn shut.

I'll bite... Pocket are sewn shut to keep the shape of the garment before purchasing.

The thread on the top of the shoulders is useless, but is sold even on the finest garments.
