Why do polo shirts have horizontal stripes, but dress shirts have vertical?

Because of the British royal family.

(That's always the answer.)

If you are referring to short-sleeve polo shirts, they are in the same family as long-sleeve polo/rugby shirts, which are a subcategory of sweaters -- and sweaters, tees and knits in general tend toward horizontal stripes, while shirting and suiting typically feature vertical stripes.

I have seen button-ups with horizontal stripes, but only a few times, and they looked undesirable frankly.

I have no idea about the underlying logic though.

yeah he is asking why knit shirts tend to have horizontal stripes and woven stuff tends to have vertical stripes. i can't actually answer that question myself and i have asked it before. (google, pondering at night b4 bed)

maybe something to do with how the fabrics are woven and then sewen together? So knits are different to broadcloths?

Especially for the members of the British royal family that played polo.

Why? So you don't look like a referee. I believe a few companies tried making them a while back, but customers stopped buying them when people kept coming up to them to settle their disputes.

Vertical stripes are slimming, which is advantageous in the business world.

Horizontal stripes makes you look larger, which is advantageous on the street.

Don't be ridiculous, people! All these posts and EVERYONE has the wrong answer?

Polo shirts have horizontal stripes so that I will look grotesquely fat in them. I thought even children knew this.

Separate players from referees.
