Why do dress shirts have tails?

A further question: How far beneath the pant waist should the shortest part of the shirt be? How much longer should the tail then extend beyond this shortest point?

Alex -- do you determine shirt length based solely on the person's body or do you take into account the rise of the pants they generally wear (high waisted pants might dictate a shorter shirt than low rise).

my bespoke dress shirts are made with the shirt tail covering the whole of my bum comfortably and the shortest part is only about 1.5" from the shirt tail. These are to avoid your dress shirts from popping out of your pants when raising your arms or when sitting down.

This length should help cover my back when I wear my low waisted dress pants. I prefer to make my dress shirts universal to meet the various rise of my dress pants.

Re: punctuation, I've started another thread referencing a Best Seller on the Social Life fourm. Perhaps we can discuss which typeface causes the least bulk below the line for serifs or the comma?

I wouldn't take grammar advice from Word if it were the last available option. Not to say that I'm right, by any means, cause frankly, it doesn't really appear that either way is right or wrong, but Word is certainly not a valid source of advice. Dan

Raise your arms vertically over your head to pull the shirt out as much as possible at the side seams. The shortest point on the side of the shirt should be 2" longer than that. A rough indication, for many, of the correct length of the shirt tail is to make it about an inch above the point where your fingertips end when your arms are hanging loosely but straight down. On the other hand, it should not be so long in back that you end up sitting on it. It is somewhat of a personal preference which is determined differently for each client. I absolutely do not take 'high' or 'low' waisted pants into consideration in this regard. Shirts I make commonly last 10-15 years; some of the better ones have made it for a quarter century; a few miracles have outlived even those. Trouser fashions change. I make shirts to fit the wearer, not the designer whim of the moment. amirrorcrackd

Never one to let a good hijaak go ... even if its only a semi-hijaak. I believe that would probably be Engravers Gothic.
