This tapering helps to anchor the collar, if you will; by contrast, a straight collar ends up looking somewhat clumsy with the collar points suspended above the clavicle area.
Well, cutaways are pretty rare, and I tend to think that alone draws attention to a place I don't want it. But I also think the dramatic contrast between the skinniness of my neck and the severe angle of the collar only underscores how skinny my neck is. It's the Laurel and Hardy effect. The attributes of one magnifies the attributes of the other. Some of it's just personal taste, too. I agree with you about point collars looking clumsy without a tie, and that's why I like buttondowns. But that's an entirely different aesthetic than a cutaway worn open. I have to admit, I look upon cutaway collars with some suspicion.

Considering their relative rarity, I agree that the cutaway's distinct form might draw attention to one's neck area. As you said, it is really a matter of personal preference. I have worn cutaways for quite some time, and have always preferred their overall aesthetic to the banality of the ever ubiquitous straight or medium spread collar.

I'm not sure it's a good idea if your neck is wider than your head. Then it says "LOOK WHAT A THICK NECK I HAVE I MUST BE A REALLY BIG STRONG GUY AND YOU BETTER NOT MESS WITH ME" a little too loudly.

I was going to say this in reference to myself. I'm short and wide. The last thing I need is a horizontal line right under my chin accentuating it.

I have a tall skinny neck and like cutaways with a slightly higher band.

I think there is a difference between a wide face and a fat face. There is nothing wrong with having attention drawn to a wide face if it is not unattractive. Fat faces, on the other hand, are best downplayed.

I think it a great look as long as you are wear the right tie knott with it, I would not wear one open collar though. I can't wear them, they just don't work with bowties that well.

I wear them exclusively but I don't like it when people think they need to wear a full Windsor knot with them. Half Windsor looks good I think.
And I agree they perfectly suit people with rounder faces.

I am very much the contrarian on this, but I do not favor anything more severe than a semi-spread. The horizontal line of the full-spread or the obtuse angle of the full cutaway draw too much attention to the collar IMO. I prefer a more subdued collar.
