The first post was more of a description than an explanation. And the question "Why?" seeks an explanation -- more like this answer, which is great in many ways:

I think this is a good point.

I don't see why you need five pairs. Even if you only had two pairs (and wore them every day, which I doubt you will, at least not for very long) they'd last a very long time. They'd also break in and get some character a lot faster.

disagree, 2 pairs with the amount of walking done in NYC would wear out to the point of needing a resole in less then a year. If this were 5 pairs of different shoes no one on this site would jump on it, and I would say it takes 5 pairs of solid shoes to start a good rotation. That's where I'm at 4-5 pairs I rotate through in a week, and I would say another 5 would get me to the point where i feel like i dont notice them wearing out.

Ordinary folks only have a couple pairs of shoes, and they seem to last a lot longer than a year.

But, regardless, do you really think he'll be wearing these shoes every day in a year? In five? In ten? Gimme a break. Buying a lifetime supply was just silly.

.

I've got news for ya, they dont 'seem to last' a year. I've been and done it and a good pair of shoes last 6 months if you lucky, with daily wear. At that point leather soles need a resole, rubber need a garbage bin.
