Who is Chan comparable to outside Asia?

Does Chan compare at all favourably with any of the well known bespoke tailors in the UK, USA or Italy? They are obviously a lot cheaper but for the extra money - three or four times as much for most - what do you REALLY get that is just so important. I'm talking about aspects of a suit which in practical terms make it that much better to wear than a Chan.

They are a great value. I've seen excellent suits from them and others that would not be let out of a Savile Row shop. The workmanship of even the excellent ones is not quite to Savile Row standards.

That has not kept me from using one of their peers for some country suits. As I wrote, they are great value.

this is so so so true SR will give you a standard and it will be the same each time - but HK tailoring can be and in most cases inconsistant and for the prices chan charges i would go to any of the tailors in soho's berwick street!

but...all these posts doesn't really answer the question. Some Savile Row shops have tried to move their shop to China haven't they? If they have brought their knowledge over, why can't they be able to churn out the same product?...

I'm not asking about detailed differences a connoisseur can spot...rather how much better you feel in a SR suit (or US or Italy) just BECAUSE it has this or that which Chan cannot or will not do.

With deference to luk-cha, I am not certain how you could quantify Chan being 3 or 4 times less than SR. I am a satisfied Chan customer and think that with the selection of a great fabric, one can get an excellent suit at a fair price.

but i dont think chan's stuff is really bespoke! i would say it is more glorifide M2M - also they dont have the skilled trades people in HK now. this is true for all M2O products even shoes bag's etc! also most are too inconsistant, today you will get a great product and tomorrow you will get a bag of sh1te for the same price.

if i had the choice i would much prefer to buy in London or naples you can but full bespoke from of the row for about 800 pounds in a staple fabric, tailor such as Chris Kerr, Tom Browne and Tony Lutwyche all on Berwick Street. and all their prices are starting about 700 - 950 pounds and the suit i have from Chris Kerr is far better than any of the suits i have seen from chan.

and i would still have my suit made by him if i was in London more regular

So...which parts would this be?

In terms of quality...would this be e.g...

Different types of stitching/handsewn machine sewn in different areas, subject to requirements
(mobility, flexibility vs strength vs etc)

Lapel Roll, how they set, sew, etc?

this is quite easy! a SR suit will fit like it is your second skin - were as chan and other hk tailors with fit you like a glove - most tailor here in HK are not capable or are unwilling to certain things that on a SR suit you will not even need to ask for as it is their standard!

the skill of the cutter is the main issue here, the handy work etc is fine but you ask the to give you a full chest or a full back ie drape as in A&S or Rubinacci and they can not do it! or are unwilling to do it!
read this from the english cut blog and get them to do it in HK
http://www.englishcut.com/archives/000141.html

it will be impossible! well all the tailors i have asked about it anyway.

some might say these are small thing but it is the difference that to the eye is small but the wearer huge!

I beg to differ. If one is measured for a suit in one of Chan's shop's, one has a paper pattern prepared, goes through multiple fittings, and can have each feature prepared to exacting specifications. That is pretty much bespoke. As to the consistency of quality, I have neither seen nor heard of a problem with Chan. While I do not have a sufficient basis of knowledge to compare quality of construction to ALL of the English or Italian bespoke houses, I do believe one receives very good value for the price.

just because one uses a paper pattern ans has multi-fittings does not make something truely bespoke any M2M could use a paper pattern as it would take up less space and give you 2 fitting also! so according to you this makes it bespoke! as it covers all your expectation of what bespoke is! or maybe i could put it a simplier way ordering a stake medium rare - cooked to your liking - so is this bespoke too!

this thread was suppose to offer the poster options as to a tailor whom is comparable to chan outside of asia hence my recomendations to visit non SR tailors in Soho - i am sure the poster does not care the in's and out of is it - is it not bespoke!

if one of us had said brooks brothers or topman or george for asda then yes you can come back with comments like yours as nobody has not said that chan's suit are not value for money i just offered an alternative outside of asia - which(not to repeat myself too many times) is the titloe of the thread.

with this is you have not suggestions in other citys whether in the states or europe then then why bother to post as all you do is take the thread of course!
