Yesterday a middle-aged male cop complimented me on a pair of EG Westminsters that I'd bought a couple of weeks ago from another forum-member. I realized that, since I've adopted a large SF-approved wardrobe (casual and business), I've been getting steady compliments from other men. But very few from women. And, no, these guys aren't hitting on me.

I'm wondering if other forumites have had the same experience.

I'm a hetero. man, and I'll tell a woman if she's wearing a nice pair of shoes. I don't see that as an automatic come-on, but maybe I'm wrong.

My personal stats. are the same as a lot of guys on this 'site: single, professional, late-20s, gym routine.

Is there a point at which a $5K RLPL jacket (though bought for $500 on the B&S) just makes a guy seem unapproachable?

No, they're not. Not any more than the guys in the WAYWN are hitting on each other.

I just mean that I'm in shape. I didn't want to be the guy who says, "No body fat, and cut like Channing Tatum."

Do you get more compliments on the way that you dress from men or women? And why do you think that's the case.

    There's nothing more behind this.

I get equal numbers of compliments from men and women. Usually there is a line. I limit the talk to "Hey, I appreciate it" or a quick nod and a slap on the back. I used to spend more time talking to each person but then I end up with people waiting over 10 minutes just to give me a compliment. There is always the tradeoff between having a genuine interaction with each person and having long wait times.

I normally get more compliments from women than men - mostly from women in my office. The most striking one was from a woman whom I didn't know, from another department, but whom shares a bank of elevators with my department. I didn't recognize this woman at all, even from being a familiar face on an elevator, but she complimented me on always looking sharp. I was, in the parlance of our UK brethren, gobsmacked by the compliment - very much from out of left field.

It really depends on where I am when I actually try to dress nice.

Lately I've just been wearing better clothes at work so I get compliments from other guys at work or really they compliment how certain clothes look on me. I think they're just trying to decide if the same thing would look good on them.

Like the guy says- mostly like what we have here in this forum but it's real life.

When I go out dressed nicely it's harder to get compliments from women cause they put up their facades but sometimes I break through with something like a bow tie that looks good with a certain sport coat etc...

Pictures of your "gym routine" or gtfo. How many of these threads are we going to have?

As far as your last question goes, most people ....MOST PEOPLE...don't know what a RLPL is, so they won't care. A suit that fits is a much bigger issue. Once you get past that, most people won't notice. If you're not getting compliments from women, then there's probably a pretty obvious reason for it. lol...that comment makes you seem like a woman who's trying to explain why she's single..."Most men are afraid of a real woman." Riiiiight.

Yeah, I figured there'd be a reply like this. I don't think that you can hit too hard against the inanity of a post on a board where a thread on folded shirts has more than 500,000 views.

While most people don't know what RLPL is, they do know when something looks expensive. Or just looks good. So while they wouldn't care, it might be intimidating to the extent that a huge diamond around someone's neck might push people away.

This is such a simple thread that I can't really understand how its point has been missed: it's not about how ugly I am; it's whether or not a man is more likely than a woman to compliment a man. Although, I guess, if I take your argument, I'm extremely attractive to straight and gay men, but women don't really care for me?

Okay, now back to the really important stuff: like buying a breast wallet.

In the San Francisco Bay Area it is often difficult to determine the gender of the one(s)
    offering the compliment.
