1. And... we're back. You'll notice that all of your images are back as well, as are our beloved emoticons, including the infamous :foo: We have also worked with our server folks and developers to fix the issues that were slowing down the site.

There is still work to be done - the images in existing sigs are not yet linked, for example, and we are working on a way to get the images to load faster - which will improve the performance of the site, especially on the pages with a ton of images, and we will continue to work diligently on that and keep you updated.

Ehhh, I don't like a white shirt with a sportcoat unless it is an OCBD. Butler's outfit to me would look better if it was a suit, a country suit. The grey's aren't different enough to make it look right, imo.

I think Butler looks elegant in all his looks, I see nothing wrong with outfit.

Butler does look elegant in pretty much everything he posts (I cannot recall a bad fit from him). His above look is actually a decent example of how to elegantly wear an almost monochromatic outfit and look good doing it (I think he may have posted that fit for a monochrome challenge). That said, wearing an odd jacket and trousers that are similar in color can be tough to pull off. I think the above looks good because of (1) great tailoring and (2) the jacket and trousers are different (patterned vs. solid) and provide a clearer dividing line for the eye. I think the above look would be better if the odd jacket was a navy windowpane vs. grey windowpane. Of course then we wouldn't have the challenge.

One of the things dealt with in this thread and elsewhere on SF of course is the idea that a particular look, while good, often can be improved. Butler's look is good for what it is, but is not his most elegant outfit (though still is quite nice IMO). The devil is often in the details with these things.

I generally agree with the no white shirts with odd jacket concept absent OCBDs, though I will wear a white shirt with a blazer and greys in the evening without a second thought.

For the outfit, I generally agree with the idea of more contrast. I think the windowpane jacket, however, provides enough of a visual differentiation. If we were dealing with a plain grey jacket I would definitely agree.

So there's no SF rule against white shirts with sport coats? I wasn't sure if, around here, white shirts were only for suits.

There are a range of views on the acceptability of white shirts worn without a suit (generally speaking, people have less strong views on the issue if the shirt in question is a white OCBD or white linen shirt with button down collar. Personally I do not much care for white shirts except with suits or a blazer and greys in the evening. The reason is that a white shirt connotes a certain level of formality that doesn't quite work with say a tweed jacket. Plus the crispness of the white shirt and the texture of most odd jackets do not really work well together. I find light blue works with a lot more ties and ecru can be better with earth tones / tweed jackets.

Manton started an interesting thread on this subject. Whether you agree with his views or not, his thought process is useful to understand and some of the dialogue in the thread is quite good.

bill - archi answered pretty well. for me its not a hard and fast rule, it depends on the shirt, its collar and texture and what its being worn with. sometimes i like a white shirt with a SC, sometimes i dont.

White shirts are fine with odd jackets.

As a rule, I agree, but it does depend on the shirt and the jacket. Not every white shirt looks right with every jacket.
