At some point, I think it would be interesting to hear you and others elaborate on what you think differentiates good from bad stripes on a suit. And thank you and others for your efforts in this and other recent threads. I'm quite enjoying the discussion and appreciate the fine distinctions being made, in that they help me make better decisions about my own choices.

I think fine stripes for worsted and not too close together. On flannel thicker chalk stripes look good.

Due to my age and career position, up until now I haven't been required to wear a suit very often. Hence I'm building up my wardrobe slowly and focusing on quality rather than bulk shopping of lesser quality.
FYI my wardrobe currently consists of 1 suits and 4 sports coat, the next addition, a suit from Napoli Su Misura is currently in the making.

among your pics 1,2, and 3, they're all SCs? I would have thought the more muted check was a suit. Or is it actually the same jacket in all three and the photo in one is way off?

I like stripes with at least an 1" of space with a cap of 1.75" - anything smaller or larger ends up looking off. Smaller looks cheap and larger looks ganster. I have a gray flannel with 1.5" stripes (that Manton hates btw) that I really like.

I agree with the above, I would also say that stripes should always be white or cream.

RIght on, but stripes that are wide enough apart are so incredibly hard to find.

I have come to realize that as well. More often too close.

Rubinacci pic...these stripes, and indeed everything here save the wrist raff, are absolutely perfect for me:

actually now that i look at it maybe the square a little matchy with the tie...but I forgive it due to awesomeness of suit, tie, and shirt.

1.75 is a massively spaced stripe. .75 to 1.25 is the right range to my eye.

    Some stripes

The ones with the closer stripes are flannels so it looks more luxe than if the cloth was worsted like the one with the cream track stripe.

Here's another not in the above pics (only pic on hand of this cloth) @Manton, at least the lapels are wider :)

All pictures are Blackberry cellphone pics, not the greatest quality.

    1 & 3 the same sports coat
2 different sports coat (wool & cashmere)
    4 & 5 the same suit
