awful tie and ok square that does not work in this context.

I think I am completely over green shirts.

Just leaving the office and snapped a pic in the elevator for this thread. My rotten photo happily adheres to Manton's wish that this thread deal with pattern and not fit:

tan & black = awful combination.

Your grace period is almost over.

While not great, I thought that was one of o/o's better combos. The tan is too light though.

I would choose a different square here. Well, really, I almost never wear a square without a tie, but anyway, I think the neat pattern of the square is a little to close in scale to the small pattern of the jacket.

Yup, fair point. I've culled my collection of silk squares after having gone the 'nothing but white linen with suits' route, and had to make do with this one.

Hmm. Off the top of my head? Maybe something with a dark blue background, with bits of red to pick up the tie and shirt. I disagree with Manton that he's stuck with something matte, like linen or cotton. Every other texture in the outfit is matte. Introducing some sheen would be balancing.

Well, navy is generally a safe color, but this combination doesn't work. The motifs in the tie and square patterns are too similar in scale and motif. Also, the green in the square clashes in a bad way. A much darker green would work better.

I like the look of the 1st one, maybe because I have the same tie.

Both are pretty good. I like the second more. Both easily clear the "good taste" bar.

    Thanks, Matt.

I actually like it more as well; red and blue are so safe, they're done ad nauseum.
