Interestingly, most of what I know can be attributed to hanging out with Ethan Newton (Ethandesu) over the course of '08 - '10.

With the exception of a handful of posters, taking your style cues from SF might actually be detrimental.

    SAY IT AINT SO!

its not really a thread about fit, more about coherence within the items that comprise the whole of ones ensemble.

certainly whnay has become one of the arbiters of good or bad coherence in this thread, and i guess rightfully so due to his success in the area, but its not about pacifying him specifically. there are things he felt one way about that others did not agree with. there is not always a definitive right or wrong.

    Makes me see red.
    The jacket is great, however.

    Also, found these. Still barfsome?

And foo, not sure this makes any difference, but the coloring in the previous set of pics made the purple tie and overcheck look much more matchy than they were. This is a better representation. Better, same or worse?

Hence, intellectual masturbation. Its fun when done in isolation...

Stitches, it looks like you are trying way too many different, unorthodox options. I'd slow down and start over with just the basics: a solid navy single-breasted suit and a solid gray single-breasted suit. These should be staples in any wardrobe and are good benchmarks for whether things like shirts, ties, squares, etc., are useful. I'd be willing to spend two, three, four times as much on one of those than buy that many more random suits if it would get me something truly quality.

In the long run, you may actually save money too.

Solid advice that needs to be repeated every now and again.

Gaz, I think these sorts of threads can be incredibly useful.

The notion that this is all "mental masturbation" suggests that there is nothing objective to learn, ponder, analyze, etc. That's a serious mistake. I strongly believe I have become a much better dresser over the years by thinking better about how I dress. Also, it's worth noting that the best dressers on the forum, though they come from many different backgrounds and communicate very differently, tend to also be the most articulate and coherent when discussing aesthetics and style. I don't think that's a coincidence. It has to do with developing an understanding of common concepts and ideas that can be verbally expressed.

The return of many old-timers in this thread is aimed at reviving an objective, grounded discourse on dressing in good taste. I very much hope the discussion is not destroyed by popular, dismissive relativism--as it was before.

I have a request. Could some guys put together some combos with white shirts. I love white shirts, but it always leads me to go with ties that are just in the midnight navy or gray realm and squares that are either cream silk, or white linen. Other color ties look rather stark to me against the plain canvass of the white shirt. Any thoughts?

good advise, thank you. is there anything wrong with the solid gray single breasted suit i posted a few posts ago? i happen to like it quite a bit.

also, what is unorthodox about those last few pics? small dots, herringbone, repp stripe. i though those were pretty tame?

I don't ever recall you being into the bright tie/bright square thing, is this a recent development?

Point noted but some comments fail to be objective, grounded or in good taste but instead come across as dismissive absolutism. Nuff said.

    Let's move on, shall we...

Keeping it simple and the jacket in the middle is dark navy winter weight hopsack.
