In refusing their assistance in buttoning your collar, do you explain to them that all the best dressed men on tumblr leave theirs undone as well?

If you want a collar without buttons, they are available for purchase.

I think I might stop buttoning my shirts' fronts and cuffs. You know, sprezz n' all that.

This thread just died for me. I thought the early pages held out great promise. This would be a thread about tasteful clothing--something beyond CBD. Those first few pages of good stuff devolved into the same crappy stuff that everyone posts all over SF--most of which is as bad as your local Macy's. Now people are trying to argue that their purposeful emulation of another man's deliberate affectation is somehow in good taste. This boggles the mind.

I think Phat Guido justified his use/disuse of the collar buttons as getting two collars for the price of one. Not sure I'd do it, but if you want a rationale, there you go.

No. Wrong. What's wrong with you? I leave them unbuttoned because I don't like the look of the 'roll' when they're buttoned. I think it looks neater and cleaner when the blades of my shirt rest comfortably under the lapels of my jacket, not when they 'poof out' and create a 3D effect. Who on earth said anything about imitating guys on tumblr? Yes I posted the Agnelli pic, but only to show another example of this look done properly (straight blades neatly sitting under the jacket lapel.)

I've seen a lot of overreactions to unbuttoned collars in my time, but this tops them all. Bravo.

Sorry you feel that way, Doc. To me, purposefully unbuttoned collars are the very definition of bad taste.

Can't get behind the unbuttoned BD. But hey, whatever rocks your world...

Manton, is this what you meant by the Flusser fold for cotton squares back in the SquareFail threak?

The shirt in the all-blue ensemble has a Charles Nakhle tall semi-cutaway collar. The shirt in the gray and brown ensemble is Patrick Johnson's version of the same tall, semi-cutaway.

And that's fair enough. But for this thread to be useful, there has to be room for discussion and reasonable disagreement.

Truth be told, I wouldn't have posted an unbuttoned collar in this thread. But the value of the thread, for me, hinges on its participants and the overall level of discussion, rather than on whether every post appeals to my sensibilities.

I've never tried unbuttoned BD collars with a tie, but I'm not against doing so one of these days if I'm in the mood.

I agree that I don't usually like the look of unbuttoned jacket sleeves although I do just that on one or two of my sportcoats as it seems to suit the vibe.

What I regularly do is leave my shirtsleeve cuff buttons unbuttoned. I think (and this may be all in my head) that it adds a degree or two of coolness (temperature-wise) to the outfit especially during the Summer or in over-heated buildings.
