"To blatantly break the rules, to wear a white tie with a dinner coat, is to offend against tradition. The young have the right to do this, but it must be pointed out that you insult the power of the garment and weaken it."

Perhaps the compromise is a mess jacket:

What would you wear instead of the tail coat?

That is still black tie though. Mess dress is black tie. And black tie is not dependant on the colour of the jacket. And for the record that is not a mess jacket.

My problem stems from a 3pm church ceremony. Daytime wedding = white tie/tails but then the reception is at 6pm. All of this is happening in the early spring in Chicago were sun sets at 7pm. So black tie or white tie and tails? I don't really want any colored vests.

Since all options that you describe are equally wrong, why feel fettered by convention?

Alternatively, can you just get away with dressing in a suit and tie, and then focusing on having a good time?

Since the event starts at 3 p.m you are suppose to wear morning wear. If the event goes into the evening it is ok that you are still in morning wear. The only time you are suppose to wear evening wear in the day is if you are on your way to an event that will take place in the evening.

So presumably he can wear eveningwear to the afternoon wedding because he's then heading to the evening reception.

I think that a white tie on an otherwise-black-tie outfit is fine, as a way to distinguish yourself from the other men in the wedding party, who will presumably be wearing black tie. Yes, it's probably naughty and rule-breaking, but unless you invite SF members to your wedding, no one will be the wiser, and as long as your outfit is properly tailored, you will look smashing.

No. This would put the cart before the horse.
