The reason is not due to artistic differences or lack of wanting to continue, nor any health issues as both Meg and Jack are feeling fine and in good health. It is for a myriad of reasons, but mostly to preserve What is beautiful and special about the band and have it stay that way. Meg and Jack want to thank every one of their fans and admirers for the incredible support they have given throughout the 13 plus years of the White Stripes’ intense and incredible career. Third Man Records will continue to put out unreleased live and studio recordings from The White Stripes in their Vault Subscription record club, as well as through regular channels. Both Meg and Jack hope this decision isn’t met with sorrow by their fans but that it is seen as a positive move done out of respect for the art and music that the band has created. It is also done with the utmost respect to those fans who’ve shared in those creations, with their feelings considered greatly. With that in mind the band have this to say: “The White Stripes do not belong to Meg and Jack anymore. The White Stripes belong to you now and you can do with it whatever you want. The beauty of art and music is that it can last forever if people want it to. Thank you for sharing this experience. Your involvement will never be lost on us and we are truly grateful.” Sincerely, Meg and Jack White The White Stripes Yeah, they've been inactive for three years and change, but it's official now. The White Stripes are disbanded. Anyone else a fan of theirs? I didn't get into them until about 1.5 years ago and I've been waiting for Jack tour again under the WS ever since. Guess it'll never happen now. Probably my favorite WS song

Say what you want, they were one of the few important bands left in this decade.

White Bloods Cells is a classic; Elephant, Icky Thump, Satan are decent I suppose.

My kids like them, but I wasn't that much of a fan until I saw "It Might Get Loud." Came to appreciate Jack White after that movie.

Yeah, he came off well given who he was dealing with.

I never understood all the attention they got. I understood the critical acclaim. Jack White made some really addictive and vibey guitar music in the vain of Led Zeppelin and 60's garage rock bands. Seven Nation Army is as distinctive and memorable as Whole Lotta Love or Iron Man and he had that rock and roll sloganeer/lyricist thing down. That said, the White Stripes and any of band of their ilk aren't terribly ambitious by their very nature. They are also not representative of any particular cultural movement. I guess I just find the popular attachment to them sort of puzzling and I don't understand why people think they are so important.

Also, Might Get Loud was mentioned and I'm sort of curious as to why Jack White was even in it. He's very much a Page-influenced guitar player, I mean you can nearly draw a direct line in their music and how they presented themselves as artists within their groups. Also, all the guitar players I know were really disappointed with that doc and I think for good reason. It would have made more sense to have Hubert Sumlin, B.B. King, or Buddy Guy than having Jack White. Or even Van Halen.

That is a good song. White Stripes break up is like Wham! breaking up - there's one person pulling 99% of the weight. Besides, the 2020 reunion is inevitable.

Meh. They wanted someone for the younger crowd. Jack White is a very interesting character, and appeals to more people than Buddy Guy certainly would. Van Halen would have been interesting though.
