Broken in. Ultra-white makes me feel self-conscious for some reason.

What about white CPs? Mine have gotten a bit dirty but I love the crisp white look.

    Broken in, but not filthy.

Neither. Clean them when they need to be cleaned but don't slave over them.

This... you use them, but you also take reasonable care of them.

I get mine dirty, throw them in the wash and let them air dry to look as good as new. After a few washings they take on a slightly off-white look that has a certain vintage look to it. That is when I feel they are broken in.

I don't like blinding white clean, but I also don't like my white shoes to be mistaken for brown shoes. I personally feel the ideal point is when they look clean, but not new.

Too new looking is not desirable imho. Gently worn and lovingly cared for is the look I go for. Not just with sneakers, but with most things that look better with age.

I agree with what seems to be the consensus, broken in enough to make the look effortless, but at the same time not as was said before "jerry seinfeld circa 1995."

Both. Plain old Vans/Keds/CR get beat down and go pretty much unwashed. My white Four Horsemen chucks & Varvatos Chucks get cleaned after every wear.

I just gotta say that broken in is what's up, but certain stains need to be rectified [ll] or the shoes need to go. I had half a birthday cake fall, upside down, on to my Authentics, after which they officially became the rainy weather kicks.

    Leather sneakers or Canvas sneakers?
Somehow it always seems to be that washing leather in a machine is a big no-no.

P.S. The Cheng's plimsolls at Urban Outfitters are a nice pickup at 2 for $30. They don't last as long as Vans, etc. and are less comfy but the price is right.

    +1, nice summer shoes.

Just let them get dirty. They're freaking sneakers for god sakes...they are supposed to be casual. If they get too dirty, throw them in the washer, then dirty them again.
