And I'm not talking about sneakers. For some reason, I am drawn to the idea of wearing white dress shoes lately. Not with suits mind you, but with dark/black pants and wardrobes. Example:

So, assuming I will not be cast in the Pyre of Sartorial Defiance for asking this question, where does one go about acquiring well-made, simple white dress shoes and chukkas? Zappos is of no help, as I do not want to look like an Italian pimp.

There's nothing wrong with white shoes per se, but you do need to observe seasonal and situational limitations.

Just a question of taste but Laron is absolutely right on limitations and also timing to wear them....
At the right place ,with the right company at the right moment ,you could potentially look absolutely edgy and elegant....
White shoes can be volatile from the East coast Preppie (Ralph Lauren) or moody Italian dandy (Canali) looks to urban edgy rockers with pipe trousers ,you can look very couture but the faux-pas is never far away...
Versace or Dolce are designers and their models look a million dollar but like everything the decor is everything important ....
Anyway,If you look good with white shoes , you will never any problem wearing other shoe tones...
I do,personnally, have reservations on wearing white shoes but they can be quite elegant especially in the summer with the right trousers (linen for example)....
Canali on their website this summer was offering very dandyish looks with linen white shoes....
On the rock-chic side ,i will be the last person to offer you any advices and with good reasons!!!!...

I like white bucks and spectators, but I would only wear them in the appropriate season and with light colored trousers. I have seen young men coupling white shoes with dark suits. I didn't think it looked edgy, elegant or anything else but dumb as hell! But that may just be the old curmudgeon I have become speaking.

Like I said, I wouldn't pair it with a suit (ok, maaaaaybe a neutral grey linen suit), but more with the intention of offsetting an otherwise black/very dark outfit on special, but not formal, occasions. Flashes of contrast appeal to me, what can I say?

I think I'm gonna go for it.

The problem with being different or edgy is the folowing: You're taking a gamble to be seen as "avant garde or a fool"....
Most of the time ,the latter applies...
If you're more classic ,middle of the fashion road ,you're taking less risks to be run over by the fashion police....
If you look a fool ,the important is to look an interesting one!!!
