Okay, time for another stupid question. Is a plain white oxford shirt (with a tie and pin-striped pants) okay to wear without a jacket? Will the shirt itself still send a good message without anything else over it? Is this too plain to turn heads? Thanks in advance.

FYI The tie is green and the pants are dark chocolate. Also have the option of grey pants.

I wear shirts without jackets all the time, particularly oxford shirts since they are naturally more casual. But I wouldn't wear a tie without a jacket.

May I ask why you dont wear a tie without a jacket? Is that too informal/sloppy/etc.? I think the look works and its not a hard and fast rule. Your thoughts?

It doesn't make any sense.

Some people specially -35 wear ties without a jacket here if they are " on fashion" ( lets say gay)

I hate when I go to a bank and they are just on shirt and tie, jacket hanged on..

A shirt without a tie is obviously casual while a shirt with a tie is not. It looks like you took off your jacket or don't have one. And, as a practical matter, I don't like my ties flapping around.

Looks like a car salesman, especially with a white shirt. Ties belong with jackets, or at minimum a sweater.

I hate the shirt & tie with no jacket look.. you look like a high schooler or college frat kid who has to 'dress up'

Well, thank you all very much. I'm glad I posted this otherwise I would never have seen the white shirt and no jacket in such a way. I'm actually in college (graduate school), so my budget is limited like my wardrobe--black shoes only, and I don't own a dark jacket.

Guess it's time to start buying colored shirts.

Not that I like him, but the president wore shirt and tie without a jacket for what seemed like ALL of the campaign

What situations are you planning on wearing this tie in?

but he wore it with sleeves rolled up, which means "i have a jacket but i've taken it off because i'm getting ready to do some serious work." at least that's what everyone is supposed to think
