Okay - which watch would you get if you were in the market for a mid range (MSRP of $3500-$4500) chronograph: Option A: Omega Speedmaster Option B: IWC 3717-01 Classic Pilot's Automatic Chronograph Casting away brand preference (I know IWC is a forum favorite and considered to be a tier higher in prestige) - which one would be your choice and why? Thanks!

To my eyes, the IWC is clearly the more beautiful watch.

I am not a big fan of these big metal-banded sportswatches in general, so perhaps I prefer the cleaner, less cluttered look of the IWC. I know that Omega Speedmasters and Seamasters are quite popular - but I've never quite gotten the look. I say this even as the owner of 2.5 Omega watches (one is a Patria, which is an ancient pre-Omega brand name, but the same company) but mine are more dress-style watches than sports watches.

I checked IWC. Only because it looks better.

Speedy is one of the most iconic chronographs ever. I'd go with a clean non-chrono if I was going for an IWC pilot (e.g. Mark series)

+1.

I love the Mk XV and Mk XVI but somehow the chrono version doesn't work for me, while the speedy is (rightly) an iconic wristwatch.

IWC 3706 if you want an IWC chrono.

But if between those two, probably the Omega. I can't abide the 3717.

The Speedy is a classic, but the IWC KO's the Speedy in the second round. NO CONTEST!

+1.

Also am I the only person who doesn't like having to set the day or date on my watches?

+2, or whichever. Looking at the dials, it's clear to me that the Speedy was planned and designed as a chronograph from the start, while the chrono functions on the IWC look slapped on, like an afterthought. I vote for the Omega, but then again, a good vintage one (cal. 321, please) is one of my grail watches.

I like the IWC in RG; I've had a Speedy for many moons.

ugh... there is so much that's wrong with this watch I don't know where to start... It even looks fake - is it?

Do you own this ugly thing? Sorry if I offended your immaculate taste (I'm referring to the many of you, of course)
