Which ties to buy?

I was thinking of picking up a bunch of ties from the FS section.
I was wondering what the rule is about ties when it comes to conservatism. If its for work and i'm going to be wearing them with white/blue/light pink shirts then what are some good colors for ties?
Are shapes and stripes too much or are they okay?

Finally what are some good brands? hermes? ferragamo?

How long is a piece of string... You're being a bit vague here. and Ties are one of the most personal things, it's really just personal taste, although there are some general guidelines...

With those color shirts, get some basic ties and a few that are out there.

IE stripes - red, blue, white (think Brooks Brothers classic), and Polka dots (Black with white, navy with white or pink), etc.
Get a few solids with self or simple patterns (Eg Brown, dark green, maroon, etc). Think subtle paisley, small prints. Below are some examples.

As for brands, start wearing ties. worry more about color, pattern, texture, and especially the correcty width before getting into $300 7-folds... Same advice as with suits.


1. Look up a thread from a while back with favorite ties (I think there was one),
2. go over the WAYW (keep in mind these guys have some "credibility/liberty" with what they wear, as a first year you need to be damn conservative)
3. Look at buy and sell, although consider that someone is getting rid of them...
4. Don't go overboard... when in doubt, leave out. look around your office and the district during lunch to see what people are wearing.
5. Go to websites, arrange ties by best selling. ask associates in stores what sells best..

These are just some ideas, although I copied them because they're already 1 step further then the basics... so take with a pinch of salt, but hopefully will spark some ideas.

To make explicit what most of the images show, most of the background (predominant) colors should be dark. For conservative situations, that is.
