Which suit (jacket) fits best? (pictures)

Hello everyone,

looking to buy my first suit, going with navy as a color.
I went to a big menswear shop and just tried on a lot of suit jackets, but although I know some pointers how a suit's supposed to fit, I still wasn't sure which one fit best - so I took pictures of each jacket I tried on..
I'm looking for a more modern, slim fit suit;

I don't mind taking it to a tailor so long as the alterations necessary can be done relatively cheaply.

Long story short, cheap tailor alterations taken into account, which one of these suit jackets fits me best?
I'm relatively tall so I only tried on long sizes, some in several (wrote the size in brackets after the brand)

Hoping the pictures aren't too bad quality/awkward poses, but any help is much appreciated!

Hate to say it, but none of these photos are particularly good for gauging fit. All are wrong (as any untailored jacket would be) but without seeing your body in a totally neutral position (not holding a smartphone up to a mirror), it's very difficult to make recommendations. Can you have someone else take the pictures, and keep your arms neutrally at your sides?

The Oliver suits look like they fit best, including acceptable fit at the shoulders, which is one of the hardest things to fix. Shoulders should not have big dents.

Unfortunately not, I was hoping someone could make an "as far as I can tell" statement despite my awful pics at least though

Thanks for the input, I appreciate it - would you say size 98 or 102 fits better?
And (from what you can tell), what alterations should I have a tailor make?

Maybe 98. Its shoulders still ought to be improved by a tailor and it has a collar gap that can and should be fixed, while 102 has a huge collar gap that a tailor might be unable to fix.

Ok. Buying a suit 101.
Don't wear a tee shirt/baseball type shirt/etc.

Wear a proper DRESS SHIRT when getting fitted.

The sales people should have sent you home to change. Seriously.
Pics mean nothing w/o a proper shirt on. Sorry.

Tailors have tricks to make small adjustments to the shoulders. The end result might not be perfect, but it should be adequate.

It's hard to say what else might need work, due to the poses and low image quality. If the jackets are too short, then don't buy - the entire butt should be covered when pants (not jeans) are worn at the waist. A tailor with his own shop should be able to spot problems.

Okay, went to the store one more time today and took more pictures, with neutral pose, shirt and slightly better image quality - this time only of the s.Oliver suit jacket though.

Is there anything else I need to know, e.g. anything else that needs to be tailored, or should I just go ahead and buy size 98?

98 looks small in the waist. That can be fixed. However, between that and the silhouette (some of which is the camera angle), it looks unflattering. 102 looks rather big in many places. Maybe you should try another brand, something with more padded shoulders or the equivalent of an in-between size (e.g., 100). Without flap pockets definitely would be an improvement.

Well damn.

All the suits I tried on (and posted pictures of) have flap pockets, and I don't think any of them have padded shoulders.
Also I couldn't find a size 100 suit jacket anywhere in that store either.

Do you think I should just give up on that particular store and try somewhere else?

No store around there might have a size 100. Flaps can be tucked in or (most would discourage) removed. Other stores ought to have some suits with more padded shoulders. Look around before deciding.

Are there any brands that typically have suits with padded shoulders (preferrably brands I can get in Germany)?

Still haven't fully given hope yet so tried on another suit (no padded shoulders unfortunately)

Is it usually enough to try out one article of a clothing brand in several sizes, because other suits of the same brand will have the same measurements like sleeve length, collar width etc, or should you try on everything?

The size 94 looks better than the 98 and anything posted previously. However, it would need some non-extreme tailoring in multiple places, and it might be too short, which if so likely can't be fixed.

Also, it looks like there's a sleeve length difference, perhaps due to a so-called dropped shoulder. It's common but something to be concerned about, re fitness.

Jacket sizes might vary in multiple measurements, and therefore each potential size should be tried. Variation in overall length is to be expected.

FYI, virtually all jackets have some padding. Brands like Hugo Boss might have more than the average these days.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
