So, I just received two pairs of Boss Black dress shoes from Zappos, a 12 and a 12.5. These seem to have a longer, narrower last than I'm accustomed to.

The 12.5 slips on and off easily, fits in the sides and under the tongue, and actually has about a quarter of an inch behind the heel if I push my foot forward.

The 12 is a little more work to put on, but I don't feel like I'm going to crush the counter or like I need a shoehorn. It fits snugly (but comfortably) at the heel, and is a little tight under the tongue, especially on my right foot, which is a touch bigger. They feel like gloves, in contact with most points on my feet.

Both seem comfortable now, the widest part of my foot is close to or at the widest part of the shoe in each (although it feels like it might be a tiny bit closer in the 12), and neither feels meaningfully wider or narrower than the other. Only one pair will survive. The other is going back. I don't know which, though, because I don't really know what I should want in the fit of a brand new shoe. Is the pulling at the tongue on the 12 a bad sign, or is the slightly looseness on the 12.5 more of a problem?

The 12.5. Tight near the tongue means you need 1/2 size larger.

The need to use a shoehorn is not a bad sign ... actually it is the proper way to put on a shoe without gradually ruining the heel.
