I already have enough Allen Edmonds, looking for something different. Specifically, looking for a Chelsea boot with a tough sole for winter weather.

Recently came across this brand called Magnanni - which one do you guys think looks better?

In terms of functionality I'm thinking the Nico because I heard that in side zip boots the zipper can get screwed up or get caught in the leather and ruin the entire boot.

The problem with both is that I would be buying them at full retail.. I don't even spend this much on top of the line AE shoes typically, because I wait until they're on sale. Any way to get a discount on either of these?

The one which looks better is the one you prefer. No one else can decide that question for you.

Just wanted some opinions. I think they're both gorgeous, but I'm concerned about the zipper.

I have one with a zipper. Been using it for a year. Works just fine. There is a leather backing behind the zipper to make it more comfortable on the skin. It is about 3/4 of an inch and too big to get caught in the zipper. I can't see how that would happen. It's not flexible like cloth. Pics in the magnanni thread. Here.

Thanks for taking the time to link those. I had already seen all of them - they do not have the same coloration and sole as the ones in my post, I think that's why they are priced less.

To the person above with the zip boots: has water leakage ever been an issue?

I owned a pair of chelsea boots many years ago and was annoyed at how often they would poke out of my jeans when I sat down and got up. Seems like the zip boot wouldn't have that problem.

I never had any water enter the boot anywhere. Granted, I don't stand in deep puddles. I use them to walk through the rain and have stepped in 1" deep water but I don't stay there so I guess the water just dribbled off and didn't soak in. I am sure if you just stood in deep water you would have wet feet. With a 1" heel and the zipper a little higher then that, maybe 1.5"-2" above the ground including heel, it isn't a problem for me.

When you say poking out, do you mean the top of the boot is too large for your ankle? If there is too much room around your ankle then of course your pants will get caught. That isn't a good fitting boot. It should fit close if not hugging the ankle. A little space is fine but otherwise you will be constantly pulling your pants to get over the shoes when you stand up. Another option is to only buy taller boots so your pants aren't hovering over the top when you sit down. Any type of boot with an opening too large at the top will have this problem.
