On a whim, I decided I need some brown casual loafers to wear with jeans. I grew-up in Doc Martins and combat boots, so I wouldn't be comfy without a decent sole. Both these options come in under $50. Which do you prefer and why?

The first, but they are still very unpleasant to me. Really, very, extremely unpleasant.

oh yeah, it's because the ugly sole is at least confined to it's place as a sole.

I'm sorry, that was rude. Try some Deer Stags or something.

Please do not purchase either pair. The loafers posted by Willsw are much, much nicer.

The black penny loafer design, while looking like Weejuns on steroids, at least look like a recognizable shoe design. Also I would recommend avoiding the slip-ons recommended by Willsw, unless you want to come across as a middle aged, used car salesman.

I felt my image of him, with dirty camo cargo pants and a some filthy black-metal band shirt, would be complimented by a little something conservative. This image is probably not completely accurate. When I personally switched to loafers from a predominantly skate-shoe wardrobe I looked for a little more simple, sleeker driving-type shoe.

I was thinking of something casual to go with jeans and long-sleeve button-up shirt, maybe tweed sport coat.

I do like those Nice shoes - but not for casual street wear.

So, the J Crew's rather than the Ben Sherman's then? Thanks guys!

I would say that all three are a bad choice. The third pair reminds me of some really ugly padded Bostonians.

Hates of Will's shoes: why are they so bad? Especially, why are they bad compared to Weejuns. Help educate me, they look rather nice to me...

The first one at left are by far the best, a traditional look that both LL Bean and Orvis does.. Filson aswell I think. The only problem is that that sole would look far better on a laced shoe. I suggest the LL Bean Dress Rustic oxford instead if you want a casual, classic shoe with a lugged sole.

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)
